THE MIND OF CHRIST

But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who hath known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ (1 CORINTHIANS 2:14–16).

Some superheroes are celebrated and admired, not necessarily for their superhuman powers, but because of how they think. Batman is an example of this. In the comics, he is a man who does not possess the powers of Superman or the Hulk. He does not have the speed of the Flash. He has access to great resources, but he does not have the various abilities of mutants or meta humans. Many have access to great resources, but what separates them from Batman is the way he thinks. In numerous comics, he is referred to as earth’s greatest detective. Throughout different story lines, his strategy and advance planning saves the day. Despite his lack of superhuman powers, Batman is regarded as one of the greatest superheroes of the DC Comics; his character is ranked as high as Superman and Wonder Woman. It is Batman’s mentality, discipline, and dedication that sets him in a class above many other heroes. With his mentality, he is able to marshal all of his resources to advance his crusade of justice.

In this book so far, we have covered the importance of hunger, reverence, faith, love, and understanding new creation realities. All of these things will help believers embark on and progress in their journey into the superhuman life. However, to get the most of out of this journey, believers must adopt the mind and mentality of Christ. In the same way that Batman is able to marshal all of his resources together, believers can marshal all of their vast resources together if they learn to think like Christ.

The things of the Spirit of God give the ability to live the superhuman life. As the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God.” This is because “they are foolishness to him.” The apostle continued, saying the natural man cannot know these things “because they are spiritually discerned.” Who or what is the natural man? Why can he not discern the things of the Spirit of God?

All people who are dominated by their flesh, their flesh’s desires, and an unrenewed mind operate as natural people.

The natural man is the person who is dominated by his fleshly instincts and is governed by the desires of his flesh. This person is ruled by his five senses and his emotions. A person who is born again can still be a natural man or woman. This category is not reserved for the unregenerate. All people who are dominated by their flesh, their flesh’s desires, and an unrenewed mind operate as natural people.
